Interview:
Who was the best player you played with, and against?
Paul Gascoigne was class, he did things with the ball a clown couldn’t do. He was on a different planet. It’s a shame the problems he’s had, but his day he was top drawer.
Against, I never really thought of it like that. If someone did me in a match it was because I’d had a **** game, but if I had to name one I’d probably go for Des Walker, who I played against and then with for England. I was quick over ten yards, so I’d turn him and thought I’d done lost him, then suddenly his leg would wrap around from nowhere.
Who are your biggest footballing influences?
Well, can I say three?
Firstly, Nobby Stiles. He was the man that gave me a shot by bringing me in at Albion (West Brom). I owe that man a lot.
Then it would be Graham Turner in my Wolves days. He was a top class coach and a very good man too.
Finally, it would have to be Bobby Robson. He was world class, and of course he took me to a World Cup.
Which manager do you look up to most?
Not a manager, I’ll go for a coach. Don Howe. What he did at Arsenal deserves massive respect, it was so impressive. What he doesn’t know about football nobody knows.
As a manager, what is the first thing you look for in a player?
